By Nick Carrington EPLA Editor When grief attacks, it comes for the whole person, plundering their physical, emotional, and spiritual reserves. In miscarriage, a mother’s body needs to heal without the joy of holding their little one. Both parents must fight through the reality that their home is missing someone, a person of infinite value.
This kind of attack makes daily life that much harder, but life rarely slows down. Parents are often required to go to work with limited or no time off. Bills need to be paid, and they must keep their house in order. If loss parents have other children, those little ones still need to get to school or daycare or be cared for at home. Amid grief, these normal parts of life become overwhelming. Healing often comes in community, and one reason why is that we can take the burdens of others upon ourselves. Picking up those little weights allows a grieving person to breathe, if only for a few moments, and reminds them that they are loved. But even in the grief of miscarriage, hurting people don’t want to inconvenience others. They will likely not ask for help, soldiering on to avoid their pain or appear okay. Many well-meaning people have said “let me know how we can help.” Those words usually lead to nothing, the grieving unwilling to ask for something specific. So as a loved one, don’t say that. Instead, offer to do something at a particular time. Tell them you want to cut their grass on a Saturday. Offer to set up a meal train and make one of your own to bring them. Watch their kids so loss parents can catch up on important tasks or simply be together as a grieving couple. It will be much easier for loss parents to say yes to an offer of specific help, and it shows you’ve thought about their needs. Take some of their responsibilities upon yourself, sacrificing your time to help them heal. They may not know they need it, but these little acts of kindness will ease the pressure in their minds and hearts and give them more space to grieve. By: Maria Servold EPLA Editor Many parents who experience early pregnancy loss have found themselves at adrift when it comes to explaining the miscarriage to any living children they may already have. They may wonder: How do I explain that the baby isn’t going to be born? What if they ask where it went? Will I cause them pain by explaining it? One OB-GYN and mother has written a picture book that gives parents the tools to help explain early loss to children. “Why is Mommy Crying?” by I. Cori Baill, M.D., is a beautiful picture book about a boy named Max who sees his mommy crying and wants to know why. With simple, graceful text and beautiful pictures, Baill and illustrator Heather Bell created a wonderful book that can serve as a resource and jumping-off point for discussing miscarriage with children. Baill spent many years in practice as an OB-GYN and now teaches at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. After suffering a miscarriage early in her medical career, Baill said she found herself looking for resources to help her explain the loss to the two small children she already had. “I was very surprised at the lack of resources, starting with my religion, which said there was no ceremony, there was no prayer, there was no ritual,” she said. I was really surprised that there was not much out there to help me explain [miscarriage] to my children.” Afterward, she said, she had a “germ of an idea” about a children’s book that could help explain early pregnancy loss. Baill said she watched and waited, certain someone would write and publish such a book. “I had this idea for a children’s book that I thought was really needed,” she said. “I didn’t think I was the right person to write it. I didn’t think I was an expert. I kept my eye out for the book; kept looking for someone to write it.” But no one did. So, eventually, Baill wrote it herself. In addition to helping explain miscarriage itself to children, Baill said she hopes the book can serve as a springboard for discussion among parents and their children. In the back of the book, she provides a list of resources for helping children through grief, for example. The paperback book is available for purchase online, and would make a beautiful addition to any family’s library. We also encourage our readers to consider purchasing it for their local library or pregnancy resource center. Below are several excerpts of my video interview with Dr. Baill. “I was devastated. I did everything right. I didn't smoke or drink alcohol or caffeine. I took my vitamins faithfully and ate balanced meals. It never occurred to me that I would lose this baby.” Connie Shull was a young wife and mother of a two-year old daughter when she experienced the heart-wrenching grief of a miscarriage. Since she already had a child, she believed that this pregnancy would go just as well until she learned at a routine check-up that her baby didn’t have a heartbeat. “I passed the 3-month mark, so I thought that it would be safe to share with others that I was expecting. I miscarried at about 3 and a half months and had already told family, friends, and folks at church that I was pregnant.” Amidst that internal heartbreak, Connie chose to act composed so that others wouldn’t feel awkward. “It’s an incredibly unpleasant conversation for people who haven’t gone through it. I then became responsible for their emotions. I had to say, ‘Oh, it’s okay…’ even though it wasn’t, just so they wouldn’t feel uncomfortable.” Well-intentioned comments such as, “Oh, you’re young, you’ll have more,” would cause “those raw emotions of loss to come crashing back.” People did not seem to understand the significance of losing a child in the womb. Connie felt numb. Empty. She recalled moving through life in a dark, depression-laden haze for about two weeks before she could move back into her old routine. The combination of postpartum depression with the pain of losing a child caused Connie and her family to spiral into what felt like an “emotional pit.” The loss of a child is enough pain; families shouldn’t have to deal with the social etiquette that miscarriages are something to be kept private and mourned in secret. Connie’s husband was supportive, but he didn’t always know what to do: “I didn’t know how to make her feel better; all I could do was hold her as she cried.” Connie says that “I knew that I was loved and prayed over, but I felt completely empty.” A friend from church, Linda, reached out to Connie, and even though she didn’t feel particularly social, Connie accepted her invitation. Having experienced several miscarriages of her own, Linda knew just what to say and what not to say. “She prayed with me and just listened. That's the thing about loss: you have to walk through those trials to be a comfort to those in need.” It was from that experience that Connie began to heal. “I don't shy away from miscarriages or parents who have lost children now because I know their pain and how to minister to them.” Melissa, lead labor and delivery nurse at a University of Michigan hospital, says mothers often struggle with the thought that their child will be forgotten or replaced. She tries to “meet the parents where they are and acknowledge that their grief is real, that their loss is real, and that their child will not be forgotten.” Though she cannot completely take away their emotional pain, she does her best to give them space and grieve with them. Mothers often need this kind of care. The March of Dimes estimates that as many as half of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which means that most people likely know someone who has gone through this tragedy. One way we can support one another is by openly talking about and sharing our experiences; just as Linda comforted Connie, we can help each other commemorate the precious life that was lost and move forward. The EPLA seeks to help women and families find support in others who have experienced pregnancy loss and overcome the stigma of quietly “getting over it,” because no family should suffer the pain of miscarriage alone. By Emily Graham Pregnancy loss is one of the most gut-wrenching tragedies that can strike a family. Losing a child due to a miscarriage or stillbirth can be just as devastating as losing an older child, and it’s very common to develop serious depression and anxiety in the subsequent weeks and months.
It’s important to know that it’s okay to feel sad. Don’t let anyone tell you how to grieve. A loss like this - one so personal - is going to take time to fully heal. Having said that, it’s also important that you know that there are ways to help you manage your depression. The Early Pregnancy Loss Association hopes this guide will offer you some hope and support during this unimaginable time. Know when ‘healthy’ grief turns into something worse There’s no set timeline for dealing with a loss of this caliber. Every parent reacts differently, with some pushing through and surfacing in a good emotional place faster than others. Nobody can tell you how you should feel, but you should know that grief of this nature tends to “move,” according to Postpartum Progress. “‘Healthy’ grief moves, but sometimes it can develop into relentless depression that requires more specific treatment. Many moms will experience depression that includes feelings of guilt, shame, self-doubt, and sometimes suicidal ideation. Regaining a sense of self, hope, and trust is important to one’s healing after a loss such as this,” says the blog. If you find yourself “stuck” in a rut of depression for an extended period of time, it may be a signal to seek professional help. Don’t be afraid to reach out and get out There are no rules for this. Nobody says you have to struggle with the pain alone. When dealing with depression, reaching out to friends and family for support can be a great way to start to heal. Try to get out and do things that make you feel happy - even if it’s hard. The loss of a child through miscarriage is not your fault, and there’s no need to punish yourself in solitude. Boost your body and brain for better mental health Depression and anxiety start in the brain, but develop a life of their own after a while and begin to negatively affect every part of your body. If you find yourself suffering from depression, it will help to take the time to take care of your mind and body. For your mind, turn to a practice like meditation, which has been proven to help reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. You can even create a “solitude space” in your home dedicated to meditation so you can get the most benefits from this practice. Make sure the area you choose is away from the everyday hustle-and-bustle of your household, and resist having distractions like electronic devices. Sometimes indulgence is one way to deal with stress and anxiety, but it can have long-term effects if ignored. Are you overeating? Or perhaps even drinking more than usual? Look at what you’re eating and drinking and see where you can make improvements. A poor diet gives your brain and body the wrong type of fuel, and it’s hard to overcome depression when your brain is running on processed foods. Exercise is important too, as it can help you clear your head and release chemicals that trigger your brain’s happy centers. Physical activity has a way of forcing the brain to refocus, and through repeated efforts you are likely to see a noticeable improvement in how you feel. Getting a good night’s sleep is also important and you should for at least 8 hours a night. If you are having trouble sleeping, physical activity should help, but it’s also good to remove distractions from your bedroom like TVs, phones, or tablets. Additionally, a light yoga flow is a great way to prep your mind and body for a good night’s sleep. Turn to other companionship Oftentimes turning to family and friends is not enough, or perhaps they don’t understand how to talk about what you are going through. When battling severe depression, enlist the help of a counselor and spend time with a support group. You do not have to weather this storm alone, and being around people who can help you through your grief will prevent feelings of isolation. Do be gentle with yourself throughout this process. You are not running a race, and there’s no reason to add extra pressure. Time does bring healing, but when you are in the thick of depression, it’s impossible to pinpoint when or how long that will be. In the long run, being good to yourself and taking extra care will make navigating the difficult road of loss more manageable. She talks about him candidly and fondly, foreseeing a future of all the things they are going to do together. This wouldn’t be so bad, except she doesn’t have a baby brother. She has a 14-month-old baby sister. I smile, then cringe, before I announce: “No, this is not an announcement! There is no baby brother on the way!” She often calmly chimes in, “I have a baby brother!” and trails off. Sometimes the conversation is less charming, though. She once told strangers, “I have a baby brother. But he died. He died in mommy’s tummy.” I sat silently, letting them take it in, and hoping the conversation would move on. I also felt a little like a fraud, and feared their assumptions about my experience. I wanted to chime in “it was a miscarriage!” But I stopped myself. “She has told them nothing untrue,” I thought. “She has a baby brother and he died in mommy’s tummy.” Shouldn’t I, of all people, know not to compare my loss with others? Abigail knows so deeply what I struggle to know - and I carried him - that a little baby boy lived and died in my tummy. Why does it feel so distant now? Abigail’s baby brother died nearly three years before Abigail was born. He would have been older than her, but because he died in my tummy in the first trimester, he is forever her baby. By Nick Carrington EPLA Editor A few weeks ago at the Guardian, Alexandra King wrote an article titled “A maddening grief: my year of miscarriages and how I got through it.” It is a beautiful piece that touches on the various kinds of pain suffered through miscarriage – physical, emotional, and spiritual. Her pain through three miscarriages led to a new hobby: baking bread. She writes: “Still, in spite of it all, the axis upon which the tragedy/comedy line sits had figured out the coordinates of my New York City kitchen. I knew, in my heart, that it was a sad, bad joke of an impulse. No buns in my oven, at least not for long anyway. But I had to do something. So I banged out sourdough loaves by the dozen. Though many failed for no reason whatsoever, as petulant and unpredictable as my capricious embryos, I couldn’t stop. Even with forearms creased green at the elbow from the daily blood lets at the fertility clinic, where I had turned to try and see if lovely dependable science could figure out why my longed-for babies never stuck around." King also describes a new habit formed after speaking with a blood technician: “Then she asks if I believe in God. I am mortified, but I still say no, because I don’t. 'Oh,' she says, not unkindly. 'I was going to tell you to pray.' Which is why, days later, at home, watching the thick lines of my scoring puff sensuous tendrils into the lid of my loaf, I am surprised to realize, with a start, that I am doing just that. I am kneeling next to the oven, head bent, like a pilgrim at a shrine, talking to the humanist god (or goddess, or both, or nothing). That I am saying, out loud, over and over again, ‘God, please let me have my baby. I will do anything, I will be whatever you need, whatever you want, just please, let my baby stay.” I’m not sure how long I’ve been on the ground. All I know is that when I push my hands to my sticky cheeks, they are white hot, as if the oven’s flames had licked them a long time.” Baking bread. Praying. For King, these were activities born out of despair. If you read the piece (and you should), she is desperate for comfort in something, anything. Despair often drives us to new ways of thinking and new ways of doing. When we see loved ones who have miscarried, we should not be surprised by new habits. But we should also recognize that the depth of despair that King describes is because a child, or in her case, children, have been lost. Those who suffer miscarriage grieve a death, and until we acknowledge that, until we let that seep into our bones, we will struggle to comfort our bereaved loved ones. At Early Pregnancy Loss Association’s headquarters in Hillsdale, Michigan, the directors have recently taken several steps to expand and solidify our work. Most excitingly, the organization was able to move into a new, bigger space that will allow us to store supplies, conduct business, fulfill requests for care kits, and hold meetings all in one place. We look forward to working out of this location! EPLA is also in the process of hiring a part-time employee who will take over tasks like data entry, care kit mailing and organizing, care kit distribution tracking, etc. We are so happy to have someone dedicated to these tasks, which are currently shared by the board. Finally, we are glad to report that we created another 500 small miscarriage care kits in April, which were donated to Metro Detroit Share, who will distribute them as part of their own early loss bags all over metro Detroit. This is the second time EPLA has created 500 kits for MDS - the first donation was in July 2020. We are thrilled to work with MDS, as it allows us to help more women and families across the state of Michigan. We also hope to soon expand our care kit services into Northwest Ohio. 2021 is shaping up to be a year of growth and expansion for EPLA! As always, thank you for your support. By Nick Carrington EPLA Editor Our culture struggles to comfort families who have suffered a miscarriage. One reason is that we have trouble empathizing. We expect to lose elderly loved ones at some point. Many children know what the loss of a grandparent feels like. Far fewer of us know how to nurse the wound of losing a child. We can’t fathom that level of ache - what it’s like to take the screws out of a crib. Even if we can imagine the loss of a child, the lack of interaction with a miscarried child makes it harder. The parents recognize the loss as what it is: the death of a person. The mother feels her child within her, or at least the sickness, tiredness, or other bodily changes that come with being pregnant. She bonds with her little one in a special way, the way only a mother can. Both the father and the mother dream of who that child will be. They think of holding that little one, clothing him or her, instilling wisdom and virtue. A father may read or sing to his child in the womb, hoping he or she will learn to recognize his voice. The parents love the child. Their child. But as friends and family, we don’t dream daily of that child. We never get to hold him or her. While we understand that little one is part of our family, we don’t feel it until we experience him or her for ourselves. So when there is a miscarriage, many loved ones struggle to empathize. It feels like an event without a category, something outside of our experience. It’s not. Not feeling the weight of reality doesn’t change reality. Our loved ones have lost a child and to mourn with them, we must work to empathize with them, recognizing the magnitude of that loss. To do otherwise is to fail to help the parents or give dignity to their child. To see and on some level, suffer that loss, we need to read stories of loss. We need to absorb the kind of language parents of miscarriage use. We need to listen to our loved ones when they are ready to talk. In doing so, we take a small part of their burden upon us. By: Maria Servold EPLA Editor Anyone who has suffered a miscarriage knows the sorrow that follows in the aftermath of the loss itself. Many times, women must return to work soon after a miscarriage, as they may be unable to take paid time off or feel uncomfortable asking for time off. At the end of March, New Zealand’s parliament voted in a law that will provide three days of paid bereavement leave to mothers and their partners after a miscarriage. While some private companies may already offer paid bereavement leave for miscarriage, New Zealand’s national movement sets a great example for the rest of the world. Mothers and fathers who experience loss should not feel awkward or guilty for taking time off to grieve; nor should they have to use paid sick time in the wake of a miscarriage. As quoted in the Washington Post, Ginny Anderson said, “The grief that comes with miscarriage is not a sickness, it is a loss.” According to the Post article, the United States has no laws in places about paid leave after a miscarriage or stillbirth. We acknowledge that many companies probably have their own miscarriage bereavement policies, but it would be great to see national recognition of the need for such leave. When I lost my first baby to miscarriage, I had a deep fear that the world would forget my baby. I wanted my baby to be known, to be seen, to be loved. I resolved that I would carry on the memory of my baby and save a space for this child as part of our little family. I was desperate for this child to have a space. We decided to call our first baby Baby, as that is what we had called the child for more than two months. I decided that I would mark Baby’s due date with a single purple rose each year. This would be a part of our family tradition, even if and when we had living children. I also had carved out space for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and the loss date. I had many plans so that we wouldn’t forget Baby. Then we lost another baby, and another. The ceremonies were getting harder to juggle and seemingly less necessary. Then suddenly, after three losses and two live births, I couldn’t keep straight due dates, birth dates, and loss dates. My four year old has hardly heard me talk about our first three children and I haven’t bought a single purple rose in a few years. It would be easy to feel like I have failed them. But I haven’t failed them at all. What I realize now, seven years after my first loss, is that I will never forget these children. These ceremonial acts were very helpful as I navigated the early days of grief, but I have found a less demanding and rigorous routine that helps heal my soul in this season of life. The memory activities are less scheduled and more free-flowing now. I might purchase purple roses randomly or visit the memory box on accident while cleaning and organizing the bedroom. But this doesn’t mean these children don’t hold a real space in our lives. Instead, they are integrated into my life, much like my living children. I think of them often, not only on their “birthdays.” My fondness never fades and their reality never goes away. Even when I forget the flowers.
